Buy Certified Humane Food

Health Add comments

I tend to buy more natural foods like organic, free-range etc. because I believe they are healthier and the animals are treated better.  However not all of these labels mean the same thing.  After looking at all the different definitions I think I have a new favorite, Certified Humane.

Seeing this video was just another reminder that the humane treatment of animals is important to me and that I should make the choice for Certified Humane when the option is available.  I suggest you all consider doing the same.

You can read more about truth in labeling here.

Here is a list of companies that are currently Certified Humane.

If anyone has a website they recommend for affordable certified humane food please post it in the comments.  I just requested that Trader Joes carry more certified Humane food so hopefully they will listen.  Feel free to request it as well to increase the likeliness it will happen.

One of your best posts to date.

The food movement is very important and it’s encouraging to see certifications like this one that are raising the bar by focusing on animal rights (though I must say that I despise PETA). Also, more attention needs to go to the people behind our food, typically minorities with low incomes.

I think that many farmers probably could be Certified Humane, but either don’t want to spend the money to be inspected (over $1000) or don’t know about. In the latter case, it’s great to spread the word with blog pieces like this one.
